"In order to be a mentor, and an effective one, one must care. You must care. You don’t have to know how many square miles are in Idaho, you don’t need to know what is the chemical makeup of chemistry, or of blood or water. Know what you know and care about the person, care about what you know and care about the person you’re sharing with.... a mentor helps the person interpret the world."

INSPIRE (HER)

Inspire (Her) is a program to stimulate the collective thoughts of young women through discussions and panel forums. The topics focus on issues facing young women like “Body Image,” “Valuing Yourself,” “Growing up without a Dad,” “Identifying Positive Role Models,” and “Leadership 101.” Moderators will facilitate these discussions and will add their thoughts, feelings, and their unique experiences. Young women will also get the opportunity to attend Youth Summits, Student Conferences and Leadership Development Training, and Special Speaker Series.

OUR IMPACT & WHY YOUNG WOMEN OF COLOR?

In the United States, girls and young women of color face deep-seated disparities. From birth, girls of color are more likely to face poverty than white girls: over 60% of girls of color are born to families living on low incomes or below the poverty line. They’re also more likely to suffer child sexual abuse, be sexually harassed on the street and at school, and experience dating violence. Distinct differences in the ways in which class, race, immigration status, sexual identity, youth, and other identities intersect in the lives of girls of color also drive unique disparities. Black girls, for example, are six times more likely to be suspended in school than their white peers. Native American girls experience the highest rate of physical assault by an intimate partner. Twenty-two trans women and girls were murdered in 2015, with women and girls of color making up a disproportionate number of the victims.
